A return to a beautiful sunset over the outback cattle station we visited on our trip from Darwin to Adelaide. I love that bin – I know it’s not remarkable to anyone else, but to me it’s Dad, J P Roche. That’s how he signed my 21st birthday key – and how we signed every card he received after that, just our initials and surname.
Dad loved burning things in the old 44-gallon drum on the farm, often with more enthusiasm than environmental awareness, heading out with a glint in his eye and a spring in his step. So, when I saw the barrier mesh sitting up jauntily in this bin I was at once reminded of him.
So many memories came rushing back while I painted this piece. I miss his steady, unconditional love and that cheeky sense of humour so much.
